Go for something better than entry level. The only mechanical problems we’ve had on trips so far (we don’t count flats as mechanical) have been with pedals. Using clipless pedals adds efficiency. If you’re considering these, make allowance for the extra cost of the cleated cycling shoes you’ll need, and be prepared to go through some learning before you head out.
