Titanium

Sadly, the “First Decent Ride” mentioned in the last post was also my last of 2012.

In September, my collarbone suddenly went POP – OUCH, as I did a bit of energetic back stroke at  the Vancouver Aquatic Centre. This was over six months since the bike accident; it turned out the bone had never healed properly, and I was told that it wouldn’t without surgery.  I rode my bike only once after it came apart, and I got a stab of pain as I went over any crack in the pavement. In fact, the “non-union” worsened to the point that I could feel the bone ends moving at the old fracture site. Our future bike travels were in jeopardy.

The surgery was in mid November, and I now have a titanium plate screwed to the upper surface of my collarbone. All is healing well. Today I swam 400 metres of gentle breast stroke — a first pool outing since the surgery — and we are still planning a spring departure to cycle around  Northern Europe.
