Correction: Sugar Beets

The huge piles of root vegetables we saw in Switzerland and also here in France are neither turnips nor celeriac; they’re sugar beets. Our mis-identification was brought to our attention by a friend. Our observations concur with her description of the molasses smell which she describe as coming from the processing plants and the hazardous slime left on the road where beets have fallen from  passing trucks.

Thank you to Margret for the timely input!
